FARMER MOD

This custom modern home captures the comfortable feeling of a traditional farmhouse, until you take a closer look.

ABOUT THIS HOME

Many elements of this custom modern home capture the comfortable feeling of a traditional farmhouse: the custom butcher block and soapstone countertops, custom extended-length cabinets and open bookshelves in the living area with built-in plate rail, the barn doors made from reclaimed wood, and the rusted Corten steel on the exterior all make you want to believe this new home has been sitting on the site for a hundred years. That’s until you start to notice the modern details, like polished concrete floors complete with in-slab radiant heating AND cooling to keep the home comfortable year-round. (An enormous ceiling fan on the main floor helps circulate the warmed or cooled air from the ground up.)

Shiny electrical conduit serves as the railing for the open-riser steel staircase and second-story catwalk, which is brightened by clerestory windows. And the traditional fireplace is surrounded by custom steelwork for a bright accent. Finishing touches not immediately evident to the casual observer include an elevated dog washing station, remote access thermostat controls, an entertainment alcove that is hidden from view until it’s in use, and a custom dining room table made of steel reclaimed from a previous structure on the building site.
