When we use the design-build process for custom homes with our customers, we find there are often a few things on their wants-and-needs list that are pretty much non-negotiable.
For this 2,400 sq. ft. custom home, our clients’ primary want was to capture the panoramic views of the open valley the site overlooked. Their need was an ADA-compliant first floor for easy wheelchair access. We nestled the home into a large red sandstone outcropping and used that color as inspiration for the red windows and metal roof, as well as the red-tinted flagstone patio that extends from the outside to the inside entry and blends in with the native landscape. We were able to build the home on an existing foundation to help to limit the excavation work, saving money.
Four-panel sliding doors in the living room open the home to the deck and the expansive views. We repeated the design of the shade trellis over the deck into the kitchen, making it appear as if it were one continuous structure. The main floor features no elevation changes, even out to the deck, making it wheelchair accessible throughout the primary living space.
