This Craftsman-style home rebuild nestles into a long, narrow lot in Old Town Fort Collins. We worked with a local architect to custom design a new home that offered the Old Town location and styling of an older home with an open floor plan, vaulted ceilings and other features designed for modern living.

The home not only needed to fit comfortably on the lot, it needed to blend in with the existing neighborhood. Period exterior details, including four-inch horizontal lap siding, shake shingles at gable ends, and natural, locally sourced Colorado buff stone allow the home to fit in with the others on the block. The long, south-facing wall gave us the opportunity to use large windows to capture passive solar heat in the winter. Mature deciduous trees on the west side shade the home and the low-maintenance Ipe-wood deck in the summer.

Important to the homebuyers were aging-in-place features. We created wide hallways and doorways, no-threshold shower entries, and a level path from the detached garage into the home to improve accessibility.

Lighting was also important. In the kitchen, backsplash windows let in natural light while the timeless white shaker cabinets with marble countertops keep the area bright. In the main floor master suite, the ceiling height ranges from 7 ft. to 10 ft. with cove up-lighting to avoid harsh downlighting. The variance offers volume but keeps the room cozy.

To make the basement seem less like a basement, an open stairway with custom metal railings lets light in from above while large concrete window wells and 9 ft. ceilings open it up from below. A wood-look luxury vinyl tile (LVT) gives the family room a cozy touch and makes maintenance easy.
