Chateau Brot

When a client from out of state came to us after buying a property in an old Fort Collins apple orchard, his intention was to complete a large-scale remodel of the existing 1960s-era home. But during the design process, he decided getting what he wanted from his new home was going to require taking most of the old one down and starting over with a new custom home instead.

ABOUT THIS CUSTOM HOME

The owner was passionate about sourdough, so we installed a special refrigerator for his starters and a butcher block counter top for kneading his bread dough. A set of four Miele steam ovens did all the cooking – a custom stainless steel façade surrounding the group hides a customized exhaust system to vent the steam outdoors.

The majority of the countertops in the kitchen are soapstone, which is accented by other natural stone in the home including dramatic, backlit onyx backsplashes and the limestone wall at the front door that flows from the outdoors in. Once inside, the radiused, undulating slatwall with lighting detail guides guests to the heart of the home but not before a hidden coat closet opens up to stash their outerwear.

Outdoors, the owner worked with a landscape architect to make the home part of a true estate with master-planned grounds and outdoor living spaces. Pocketed lift and slide doors with a zero threshold make it easy to transition between indoors and out, especially on the way to the outdoor kitchen with built-in smoker and electric lamp heaters for near year-round enjoyment.

In contrast with the lush apple trees, a yucca xeriscape garden honors the owner’s New Mexican roots. Low site walls tie in to the grade to create multiple levels, dividing the outdoor spaces without isolating them.
