Nestled along the bank of the Cache la Poudre River in Old Town Fort Collins, this Colorado mountain modern home with its exterior blend of natural materials – stucco, locally sourced stone, and heavy timbers – feels warm and inviting even from the curb.
The home was designed to be extremely energy efficient, maximizing the use of a roof-mounted photovoltaic system and in-floor radiant heat. Tile floors help to conduct the heat and give the home a consistent warmth in the winter while at the same time functioning to keep it cooler in summer.
The owners love their outdoor living spaces, and this home has plenty. A three-season sunroom with radiant heat under the slate tile floors was a must, providing large windows from which to enjoy the views of the river practically year-round. The upstairs deck features a barrel roof with tongue and groove cedar that frames the view of the river and mountains to the west. Below, the large patio seamlessly transitions from outdoors to in with no steps to get in the way of the flow.
Efficiency carried through to the outdoors through a detailed, waterwise landscape plan. We helped facilitate the design and installation of the xeriscape landscaping that included a cozy firepit for cooler weather and native plantings of all shapes and sizes.
The interior uses smaller spaces in the Not-So-Big-House style that makes the home feel warm and cozy. Focal points on the main floor include the fireplace faced with locally sourced stone and the open stair system with custom railings and treads from local reclaimed urban Siberian elms. Cork wallpaper adds sound and heat insulation while creating a warm aesthetic and visual connection to the outdoors.
